Capetown to New Oudtshoorn

Sunday, November 1, 2015
We had an early departure this morning for our long drive that began on N-1 to Oudtshoorn (the Ostrich capital) in the Klein Karoo where we will stay for two nights.  From N-1 we took R-62 which was on a high plateau through the mountains to the small town of Robertson for a brief break and then continued through Montague, which is a fruit producing region and where much of the dried fruit comes.  The terrain is very rugged and mountainous and looks like high desert in North America with very few trees.

Along the way, we experienced sporadic rain showers associated with a frontal system moving across the cape area of So. Africa.  So, this is a good day to be traveling and not cycling.  We next stopped in Barrydale; a small village with a restaurant where we got coffee.
There the sporadic rain changed to driving rain with high winds.  Driving further, we stopped for lunch at the Pumpkin Diner where they served us chicken pot pie, caramelized pumpkin and a salad.  Definitely more food than we needed.  Around 3:20 pm we arrived at our destination, Le Plume Guest House, in New Ordsthoorn, Klein Karoo.

The Guest House in the main house on an ostrich farm and we will be staying here for 2 nights. We were all welcomed by the owners with a glass of wine and then shown to our rooms.  Louis and I have a room with a large bay window off the veranda with a great view overlooking the farm.

Although there was a ride scheduled for this afternoon after checking into La Plume, we decided to not go due to the low temperature (40’s) and steady rain.  The weather is to begin clearing tomorrow.  We had hoped to take a walk, but the rain just continued.  Dinner was a 7 pm in the large dinning area, which was candlelit.  We had filet of ostrich, which was excellent, accompanied by minestrone, salad, green beans, carrots, baked broccoli/cauliflower/onion casserole, and assorted desserts.

There is no doubt we need a long ride tomorrow.
